What is the ruling on one who promised to marry his daughter [to someone] then married her to another person?

Breaking a promise is a characteristic of hypocrites and is impermissible. The sin falls upon the father who broke his promise to marry his daughter to the first man, after having promised her to him. As for the new husband, there is no sin upon him if he was unaware of this.
