Is it permissible to supplicate for someone using their nickname instead of their real name?

It is permissible to refer to a person by a nickname if they do not dislike it. Otherwise, it is not permissible, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Backbiting is your mentioning of your brother that which he dislikes," and because Allah Almighty says: (nor call each other by offensive nicknames). It is permissible to use good nicknames that the person likes, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nicknamed Khalid ibn al-Walid "The Sword of Allah."
