What is the ruling on continuous bleeding after the end of the menstrual period, and is it obligatory to perform Istinja' and Wudu for every prayer?
If the bleeding exceeds fifteen days, which is the maximum duration for menstruation, then a woman experiencing irregular bleeding (istihada) must perform ablution (wudu') for each prayer after its time has begun. With that ablution, she may perform as many obligatory and supererogatory prayers as she wishes until that prayer time ends. She must also use a protective measure, such as binding a cloth or similar item, over the area, but she is not required to reapply the protective measure for each prayer.
However, according to the Maliki school, a woman experiencing irregular bleeding is not required to perform ablution for each prayer, nor is she required to prevent discharge. It is permissible to act upon this opinion in times of hardship.
It is not permissible to delay prayer beyond its prescribed time. If performing ablution for each prayer becomes difficult, a woman has leeway to act upon the Maliki opinion to avoid the hardship of missing the prayer time. A woman must understand the distinction between menstruation and irregular bleeding.
