What is the definition of "Hima Al-Ard" (land protection/conservation) in Islamic Sharia?

Linguistically, "Hima" (protected area) refers to something that people are prevented from accessing. Technically, it means that the Imam designates an area, provided it does not cause hardship to people, for the public good. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, designated al-Naqi' as a protected area for the horses of the Muslims. As for other Imams, they are permitted to designate areas for the grazing of the Mujahideen's horses, the livestock of jizya, the camels of zakat, and lost animals, in a manner that does not harm anyone. This is the view of the Four Imams. Some, however, hold that there is no Hima except for Allah and His Messenger.
