What is the meaning of the name "Lara" and is it permissible to name someone with it if it is not Arabic?
We do not know the etymology of the name "Lara" in the Arabic language, nor do we know of anyone among Arabs or Muslims, ancient or modern, who was named by it. It is likely derived from other languages. A Muslim should not use this name unless its meaning is known, for fear that it might contain a meaning contrary to religion and morals. It is preferable to choose good names of prophets, companions, and righteous people. If the name is free from Shari'i prohibitions, then it is permissible to use it. These prohibitions are summarized as: servitude to other than Allah, names exclusive to Allah Almighty, a blameworthy meaning, lack of meaning or effeminacy, and self-praise.
