Is the cutting off of women's hands like the cutting off of a thief's hand?

The exegetes differed regarding the meaning of "their hands were cut off." Was it complete severance or merely a wound? Many of them, such as Al-Baghawi and Al-Shawkani, favored the view that what was intended was only a wound.
