Is the aqiqah obligatory? And do the parents incur sin if they do not slaughter the aqiqah? The 'aqiqah is a confirmed Sunnah for the guardian of the newborn, if he is able. It consists of two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl. One sheep for a boy is permissible in case of need. Its time is the seventh, fourteenth, or twenty-first day, or thereafter. There is no sin upon one who does not perform it. If one's guardian did not perform 'aqiqah for him, he may perform it for himself if he is able. The 'aqiqah has no effect on sustenance, success, or the facilitation of matters.
