Is the story of the theft of the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) shoe and his supplication for the thief, "O Allah, if he is in need, then bless for him what he has taken, and if he is not in need, then make this his last sin," authentic?

The story of Ibn Mas'ud's supplication for the thief has no basis in the books of the people of knowledge. Al-Ghazali mentioned it in "Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din" as being attributed to Ibn Mas'ud, but Al-Ghazali is not an authority in what he transmits due to the abundance of weak and fabricated narrations in his book. This story is not authentic from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor from Ibn Mas'ud. However, whoever has something stolen from him and supplicates for the thief's guidance and wealth has done well.
