Does Allah's saying: "Then We blotted out the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible" mean that the universe went through a stage where it was in perpetual daytime?

Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned in "Zad al-Masir" that there are two interpretations for "We have blotted out the sign of the night." The first is that the sign of the night is the moon and the darkness within it, and this was the view of Ali and Ibn Abbas. The second is that the sign of the night was blotted out by the darkness inherent to the night, as it obliterates lights. It is also narrated that Jibril passed his wing over the face of the moon, thus dimming its light.
