What is the ruling on a husband who severely beats his wife for refusing to obey his command to stop watching television, and what is the ruling on his mother who justifies his action and asks the wife not to object to anything to avoid being beaten?

If a husband prevents his wife from watching television because she watches impermissible things or neglects her duties, then he has the right to do so, because it is his duty to obligate her to fulfill Allah's rights and to restrain her from evil. He is permitted to discipline her through admonition, then by abandoning her in bed, then by a non-bruising beating that does not break a bone or disfigure a limb, and striking the head is forbidden. However, if he beats her excessively or strikes her head, he is a transgressor. But if the viewing is permissible and does not distract her from her duties, he has no right to prevent her.
