Is it incumbent upon one who has forgotten what he memorized from the Qur’an to review what he has forgotten for his repentance to be complete, and how can he review the scattered sections whose locations he does not remember, and must the review be immediate?

Studying, reciting, and memorizing the Quran are among the best deeds, while forgetting it is blameworthy. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on forgetting the Quran: some say it is a major sin, others a transgression, and still others a calamity, which is the most apparent view.

Whoever forgets any part of the Quran is advised to review what they memorized until they master it again, and to continue reviewing periodically under a proficient teacher. They should review large sections such as a juz' (part) or a hizb (section), and complete surahs. They should not preoccupy themselves with reviewing small forgotten sections like two or three verses.

They must seek Allah's forgiveness and repent for their shortcomings, and actively strive to regain their memorization immediately without procrastination. However, if they can only review during their free time due to their many commitments, there is no blame upon them.
