Does a person's name affect their luck and future, and is there such a thing as a qareen (familiar spirit)?
Allah ordained the measures of all things before their creation. Naming does not affect a person's fortune or future, for everything is predestined and written in eternity. Attempting to know the future through a name or otherwise is forbidden because it falls under soothsaying. Nevertheless, the Sharia encourages good names as a form of optimism. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was optimistic about them and used to change names that contained something forbidden or disliked. It has also been psychologically proven that a bad name has a negative impact on its owner.
