Is a woman religiously obligated to strive to seek sustenance like a man?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
A woman is not obliged to seek provision unless she finds no one among her family to support her. In that case, she must earn a living for herself according to her ability. As for the man, he is obliged to seek provision for himself and for those whose support is incumbent upon him. Earning a living is a duty upon him to the extent that it sustains him, pays his debts, and suffices his dependents; as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is sufficient sin for a person to neglect those whom he supports."
