Will a Muslim be held accountable on the Day of Judgment for acting upon a fatwa that turns out to be incorrect, or will the one who issued it bear the sin?

In matters of disagreement, the common person must emulate — in issues of scholarly dispute — one in whose knowledge and piety they trust among the people of knowledge. Their conscience will be cleared thereby, and they will not be held accountable on the Day of Judgment. As for the Mufti, if he issues a fatwa based on an qualified ijtihad, he will be rewarded whether he is correct or mistaken. However, if he issues a fatwa out of ignorance or caprice, then the sin of his fatwa and of the one who sought it will be upon him.
