Is it permissible to abandon memorizing the Holy Qur’an for the sake of academic achievement?

We congratulate the questioner for joining the Quran memorization circles and for her desire to memorize it. Combining memorization with her studies is best. If combining them is not possible, then she must preserve the ten parts (ajza') she has already memorized, because neglecting them exposes one to punishment. It has been reported that forgetting the Quran is one of the gravest sins.
