Should one strive for reconciliation with his wife, despite what has transpired from her and her family, in order to preserve the children?
One should resort to reconciliation to preserve the family and protect the children, as the Sharia encourages it, as in the words of Allah Almighty: "And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause agreement between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing, Acquainted [with all things]" (Quran 4:35), and His words: "And if a woman fears from her husband nushuz [ill-conduct or rebellion] or desertion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between themselves - and settlement is best. And [human] souls have been made to incline to [worldly] avarice. But if you do good and fear Allah - then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted" (Quran 4:128).
Foundations for family stability must be established, including: caution against conflict, patience, mutual respect, and each party fulfilling the rights of the other. A wife's transgression against her husband contradicts his guardianship. Neither spouse has the right to prevent the other from seeing the children. In the event of divorce, the wife is entitled to what the Sharia has granted her. The intervention of the wife's family should be for reconciliation, not for causing discord.
