Is it permissible to wish for tribulation and ask God to afflict a servant, based on the hadith "Indeed, when Allah loves a people, He afflicts them"?
The love of Allah is attained by obeying Him and obeying His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, not by seeking affliction. Allah Almighty says: "Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you'." The has forbidden wishing for affliction and commanded asking Allah for well-being, as in His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Do not wish to meet the enemy, but ask Allah for well-being." And his saying to the man who prayed against himself: "Why did you not say: 'O Allah, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire'?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to constantly ask Allah for well-being.
