Is it permissible for the living to fast on behalf of the dead? Is it permissible to intend fasting on behalf of both the father and the mother on a single day? And is it obligatory to fast consecutive days, or is it permissible to fast on Mondays and Thursdays?

Scholars have differed regarding making up fasts on behalf of the deceased. Some have stated its invalidity, while others have deemed it praiseworthy. As for dedicating the reward of fasting to the deceased, the Hanbalis and Hanafis have stated that the deceased benefits from it.

It is permissible to combine the intention of dedicating the reward of one day's fast to both the father and the mother. The reward will be divided between them according to your intention, such as each receiving half, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "Indeed, actions are by intentions, and indeed, every person will have what he intended."

This fasting is voluntary and not obligatory, so it is not required to be continuous or on a specific day like Monday or Thursday. Rather, its amount and timing are according to your will.
