Does the oath of immersion (al-yamin al-ghamūs) taken to save a patient from punishment require expiation, and is it sworn upon the Quran?

The yameen ghamus (perjurious oath) is to swear an oath while lying, invoking Allah or the Qur’an. It is one of the gravest major sins that immerses its perpetrator in sin and then in the Hellfire. There is no expiation for it; rather, repentance is obligatory, and this is the view of the majority of scholars. Lying is permissible to achieve a legitimate Shar'i objective that cannot be achieved otherwise, such as protecting an oppressed person, provided that no other means exists, like tawriyah (dissembling).
