How do we distinguish between the whisperings of the soul and the whisperings of Satan, and is a person held accountable for self-talk?

A person is not held accountable for inner thoughts ( al-nafs) or the whispers of Satan, as long as he does not speak them or act upon them. Both are the same in ruling. Among the possible differences between them is that the whispers of Satan dissipate with sincere and reflective remembrance ().
