Is it permissible for a man to have intercourse with his wife while there are a few specks of blood at the end of her menstrual period?

If a man has intercourse with his wife while she is menstruating, and both are aware of it, then both are sinful and have disobeyed Allah.

The majority of scholars hold that what is obligatory upon them is sincere repentance (Tawbah Nasuh).

However, the Hanbalis are of the view that an expiation is incumbent upon them – which is one dinar or half a dinar, approximately equivalent to 4.25 grams of gold – and this is more cautious and absolves one's responsibility. The Hadith reported on this matter has differing opinions regarding its authenticity.

As for the case where the husband does not know that his wife is menstruating, no expiation is binding upon him, due to his lack of intentional disobedience. This is the view preferred by Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen.
