What is the ruling on raising a pet hamster in homes?

It is permissible to raise animals that are not harmful, impure, or forbidden to keep, whether for benefit or companionship, and one must feed them and treat them kindly. A hamster is not a mouse, so there is no harm in raising it. As for mice, they are among the 'fawasq' (vermin) that Islamic law has commanded to kill.
