Is it recommended to fast frequently in the month of Muharram, and does it have a special virtue over other months?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The month of Muharram is the first of the Arabic months and one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Holy Quran, which are: Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. Fasting in this month is considered the best fasting after Ramadan, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is Allah's month of Muharram." The attribution of the month to the majestic name "Allah" signifies its عظيمة (greatness), and the Hadith is understood as an encouragement to fast extensively during it, not to fast the entire month, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not fast a complete month other than Ramadan.
