Scholars differed concerning the ruling on touching the penis with the right hand. The majority of jurists are of the opinion that it is tanzihi (reprehensible to a lesser degree) to touch the penis with the right hand, while the Zahiris held it to be (forbidden). They also differed on whether the prohibition is specific to the state of urinating and performing ' (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself) or if it applies to all situations. Imam Al-Bukhari was of the view that the prohibition is only during urination, whereas masturbation with either the right or left hand is haram according to the majority of scholars.
