Is it permissible to travel abroad for study with the intention of emigration to avoid problems of undutifulness towards one's mother, knowing that these universities involve free mixing between boys and girls?

It is obligatory to obey one's mother and remain with her, and not to travel for study or other purposes if it can be achieved in one's own country. One must treat her kindly and with beneficence, and avoid harming her with words or deeds. Responding to her with insults and curses is among the major sins. The Shari'ah has commanded addressing parents with politeness, reverence, and humility. One must lower the wing of humility to them and treat them with meekness and mercy. What aids in dutifulness is striving against one's self, seeking Allah's help, purifying one's intention, and remembering the virtue of dutifulness to parents, which is the pleasure of the Lord and the middle gate of Paradise. Dutifulness to the mother, in particular, is among the best acts of obedience and the most swift in reward. If an offense occurs, repentance and seeking forgiveness are obligatory, for Allah is Most Forgiving to those who turn to Him repeatedly.
