What is fame? And how do I know that I am doing something for fame?

The blameworthy fame (shuhrah) in Islamic law refers to violating the customary and well-known appearance among people, whether the person distinguishes himself by quality, poorness, or color. The early Muslims (Salaf) disliked both elevated and lowered garments, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever wears a garment of fame, Allah will clothe him with a garment of humiliation." This can also include a person distinguishing himself by his car and adornment, the criterion being his deviation from the general public in a way that makes him stand out.
