What are the boundaries of a wife's relationship with her husband's mother, and is she obligated to serve her in light of her extensive interference and numerous demands?

The husband's mother has many rights over her son's wife, among them: the right of Islam, the right to respect elders, good treatment, gentleness in speech, and a cheerful countenance. The wife must treat her husband's mother kindly and strive to please her by every possible means. If she is unable to do so, she has the right to request a separate home.
