What is the authenticity of the narrations mentioned on the authority of Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding seeking forgiveness seventy times at the time of pre-dawn?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Hadith: "We were commanded to seek Allah's forgiveness seventy times during the pre-dawn hours (sahar)" is weak due to the discontinuity (inqita') between Muhammad ibn Jahadah and Anas, and the weakness of Sa'id ibn Zayd. However, the virtue of performing night prayers (qiyam al-layl) and seeking forgiveness during the pre-dawn hours is firmly established in the Noble Qur'an and the Sunnah. Allah Almighty said: ﴿AND THOSE WHO SEEK FORGIVENESS IN THE PRE-DAWN HOURS (AS-SAHAR)﴾ [Qur’an 3:17], and this indicates the excellence of seeking forgiveness at this time.
