The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, answered a man who asked him about his brother, saying that his brother was imprisoned because of his debt, and he ordered him to pay off his debt. The debt that imprisons a believer's soul is a legitimate debt. So, if the taxes are legitimate, one must hasten to pay them on behalf of the father. However, if they are not legitimate, they do not imprison a believer's soul, and it is permissible to evade them by any means that do not harm the questioner. To distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate taxes, one can refer to relevant fatwas.
