Is it permissible to respond to one who reviles the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, by reviling the speaker, knowing that this may increase their revilement and mockery?

Reviling the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is an act of disbelief that necessitates the killing of the reviler, whether he is a Muslim apostate or a dhimmi who has violated his covenant. The ruler is responsible for executing this حكم (legal ruling). A Muslim must denounce and strongly condemn any reviling of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when they hear it. It is permissible to revile the reviler in return, as he initiated the offense, while also referring his matter to the ruler. If there is no one to enforce the hadd (prescribed punishment), then the Muslim should do what they are able to without causing corruption. The verse "And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah" (6:108) does not apply to someone who initiates insulting Allah and His Messenger; rather, it is obligatory to retaliate against him and punish him.
