What is the ruling regarding a husband telling his wife: "If she completes her studies, she is irrevocably divorced (triple talaq)," after the intervention of her family, knowing that he had sworn by divorce twice previously and paid expiation?

The majority of scholars hold that conditioned divorce (talaq mu'allaq) takes effect when the condition is met, and that a triple divorce pronounced at once counts as three divorces. This is the prevailing fatwa. However, some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah, are of the view that conditioned divorce intended for threat or prevention does not take effect, but rather necessitates an expiation for a broken oath (kaffarat yameen). He also believes that pronouncing triple divorce at once counts as a single divorce. It is best to present the matter to scholars. A wife is not permitted to leave her husband's house without his permission, and obedience to the husband takes precedence over obedience to parents, unless it was stipulated in the marriage contract that she could leave for studies. We advise against swearing by divorce.
