What is the ruling concerning a wife who disobeys her husband to the extent that he spends most of his time outside the home, then returns only to sleep to avoid problems?

A wife's disobedience to her husband—in matters that do not involve disobedience to Allah—is considered 'nushuz' (rebellion). Islamic law has permitted the husband to follow steps when his wife is rebellious, which are: admonition, then abstaining from sharing her bed, then a non-violent beating if it proves effective, then arbitration by two arbiters, and finally divorce if it becomes the only solution.
