Is it permissible to apply the term "shirk" (polytheism/associating partners with God) to what is forbidden (haram)?

Forbidden acts are of three types: disbelief (kufr) or polytheism (shirk), major sins (kaba'ir), and minor sins (sagha'ir). Naming forbidden acts as disbelief or polytheism goes back to the nomenclature of the Lawgiver (Allah and His Messenger); for the Lawgiver named fighting a Muslim, wailing, and slandering lineages as disbelief, and named ostentation (riya'), divination (tatayyur), and swearing by other than Allah as polytheism, such as supplicating to other than Allah, mocking Allah's verses and His Messenger, abandoning prayer, and going to soothsayers and believing them. It is not permissible to name sins for which there is no evidence that they are polytheism or disbelief with these names.
