There are two interpretations for the meaning of "peace be upon the Prophet - may Allah bless him and grant him peace." The first is that "Al-Salam" is one of Allah's Beautiful Names, meaning that Allah protects and watches over the Prophet - may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The second is that "Al-Salam" is the verbal noun of the verb "sallama" (to grant peace), meaning a supplication for his safety from every affliction. This supplication is not limited to his lifetime, but also includes the horrors of the Day of Resurrection and the safety of his Sunnah and sacred law from those who would tamper with them.
