Why is the حدّ (prescribed punishment) of stoning, which is mentioned in an abrogated verse and for which no text was revealed in the Qur’an, applied, while the hadiths about stoning contradict the verses of Surat An-Nur? And did the incident of stoning in the Sirah (Prophet's biography) occur before or after the revelation of Surat An-Nur?
The source of stoning (rajm) is not solely from hadith; rather, Allah revealed a Quranic verse regarding it that was recited during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Its wording was then abrogated, but its ruling remained, and it continues to be in effect until the Day of Judgment. The verse of An-Nur applies to the virgin, and the verse of stoning applies to the married person (muhsan). The punishment forzina evolved from harm to confinement, then settled on one hundred lashes for the virgin and stoning for the married person. Stoning is affirmed by the Quran, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Companions. Indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Rightly Guided Caliphs after him, carried out stoning. The abrogator of the verse is Allah Almighty, and there is no condition for a substitute abrogation of the abrogated wording. The implementation of the verse of stoning remains because its ruling was not abrogated, only its wording was abrogated, and none of the Companions disagreed on this.
