Did a verse restricting the number of wives to four come down while the Prophet was married to nine, and what is the evidence for this from Islamic books, and when did the verse prohibiting marriage for the Prophet come down: "It is not lawful for you [to marry other] women after this, nor [for you] to exchange them for [other] wives, even if their beauty were to please you"?

"Exceeding four wives is a unique characteristic of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, due to the Almighty's saying: ﴿O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful for you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those whom your right hand possesses from what Allah has granted you as spoils of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you, and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet and if the Prophet wishes to marry her – [this is] exclusively for you, excluding the [other] believers. We certainly know what We have enjoined upon them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess – in order that there should be no difficulty for you. And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 50].

The Prophet, peace be upon him, married some of his wives, such as Safiyyah and Maymunah, in the seventh year of the Hijra, while it is probable that the verse from Surah An-Nisa was revealed before this date, and Surah Al-Ahzab was revealed in the year of the Battle of Al-Ahzab in the fifth year of the Hijra. Many scholars believe that this verse from Al-Ahzab was abrogated by the preceding verse of legalization."
