How can one deal with a father who is an alcoholic and ill, while observing filial piety and not disobeying him?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Drinking alcohol is forbidden by the Qur'an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus, and one who drinks it exposes himself to harms and punishments. Children must advise their father who drinks alcohol, remind him of the prohibition of his act, treat him kindly, and not assist him in purchasing alcohol. If he is intoxicated, he should be isolated from the family, and the matter can be reported to the responsible authorities. They should also pray for his guidance. If the father spends the money given to him on forbidden things, it is not permissible to give him money that would enable him to do so. Instead, he should be given what he cannot spend on forbidden things (such as clothing or rice) while continuing to advise him.
