What is meant by the phrase: "The covenant of Islam and the pledge of Islam" mentioned by Imam Malik?

The term "responsibility" (عُهدة) signifies commitment and safeguarding something. "The responsibility of Islam" (عهدة الإسلام) means adherence to its rulings. "Selling Islam" (بيع الإسلام) refers to a sale in which both parties adhere to Islamic rulings, so the seller does not conceal a defect, nor does he sell something to which the rights of others are attached. Their saying, "He bought according to the sale and responsibility of Islam" (اشترى على بيع الإسلام وعهدته), means he bought with his right to address defects and claims of entitlement. The seller's condition, "no Islamic responsibility" (لا عهدة إسلام), means that the buyer has waived his right to a guarantee against claims of entitlement or defects. This condition is not binding on the buyer, and he has the right to pursue it.
