Should one abandon prayer for fear of falling into showing off (riya') when one's father commands it and monitors its performance?

It is not permissible to abandon prayer out of fear of showing off, as this is a whisper from Satan to deter you from obeying Allah. Rather, you must maintain prayer even if someone sees you. Just as performing deeds for the sake of people is forbidden, so is abandoning deeds for their sake. Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad said: "Abandoning a deed for the sake of people is showing off, and performing a deed for the sake of people is polytheism."
