A person falsely promised a girl marriage, then repented and distanced himself from her without informing her of the reason, and she is hurt and has not forgiven him; is there sin upon him, and what should he do to be absolved from her right?
The brother and the girl did wrong by establishing a forbidden relationship, and the brother did well by ending the relationship and repenting. If he promised her marriage, then he should fulfill his promise unless a legitimate impediment prevents him, as fulfilling a promise is desirable according to the majority of jurists. However, if he abandons marrying her, even without a legitimate excuse, there is no sin upon him, and the girl has wronged herself by establishing this relationship. And may Allah facilitate her marriage to someone better than him, due to His saying: "But perhaps you hate a thing and Allah makes therein much good." [An-Nisa:19].
