The question

How is a paralyzed patient, whose urine spreads over large parts of their body, purified, given the difficulty of using water or dry tissues? And is wiping with wet tissues sufficient, especially with the frequent occurrence of this situation, the high cost of diapers, and the obsessive thoughts (waswas) this causes? Is it obligatory to adhere to a specific jurisprudential school, or is it permissible to adopt from all schools?

The answer

Istijmar with three wipes is only for removing the substance of impurity from the spot itself. However, if impurity affects the body, it must be washed with water. Regarding cases of incontinence (sals al-), the preferred and more cautious approach is to strive to purify the affected area on the body and clothing with water, if possible. If that becomes difficult, there is no harm in adopting the view of the Maliki school, which offers leniency in this regard. In such a situation, there is no burden on the husband concerning prayer. He should take precautions by tying a cloth over the area to prevent the impurity from spreading, provided that does not cause him harm. In summary, the fundamental principle is to remove impurity from the body and clothing when performing prayer. However, in cases of extreme difficulty, it is permissible to adopt the view of the Maliki school to alleviate hardship. And it is obligatory for the layperson to consult scholars whose knowledge and piety he trusts and to follow what they instruct him.
