Sa'y between Safa and Marwah is a pillar of Hajj according to the majority of scholars, and this is supported by many pieces of evidence, including the statement of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: "Allah does not complete the Hajj or Umrah of anyone who does not perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwah." And the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "O people, perform Sa'y, for Sa'y has been prescribed for you." However, the Hanafis and some jurists held the view that it is an obligation that can be compensated for by an animal sacrifice (dam), or a Sunnah for which nothing is required if omitted.
