Blameworthy jealousy is jealousy out of place, such as a husband's jealousy over his wife concerning her family without justification. It is impermissible for the husband to disparage and criticize his wife's family, and his preventing her family from visiting her or her visiting them without a valid reason significantly increases the sin. The Malikis and Hanbalis hold that it is impermissible to prevent the wife from visiting her parents or relatives, even if there is a dispute or disagreement between the husband and the wife's family. The duration of the visit is determined by custom and tradition, and some jurists have mentioned that it should be weekly for parents, and once a year for mahrams. The wife must be endowed with wisdom and patience, for her husband's right upon her is the greatest right after the right of Allah.
