Whoever borrows a piece of gold is obligated to return its equivalent in gold, regardless of changes in its price. It is permissible to pay its value if the lender desires that, but the lender is not obligated to accept its old price.
If the borrower is in straitened circumstances, they must be granted a delay until they can repay. Giving charity to them is better, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And if there is one in adversity, then [let there be] a delay until [a time of] ease. But if you remit [it by way of charity], it is better for you, if you only knew."
It is encouraged to deal with leniency in buying, selling, and collecting debts.
