Is marriage predestined fate or a combination of divine decree and effort? Does a father's rejection of suitors without a valid reason constitute forbidden 'adl (hindrance)? What is the ruling of Islamic law on a father's istikhara (seeking divine guidance) if its motive is illegitimate? Does the father's injustice and 'adl prevent the marriage from occurring and is it considered part of Allah's decree? Is his prayer against his daughter answered in this situation? Everything is by the decree of Allah, including marriage and the withholding of marriage (by a guardian). A Muslim is required to exert effort and not surrender. There is no contradiction between divine decree and exerting effort. A believer should be keen on what benefits them and seek Allah's help. A woman should supplicate and seek intercessors. If the guardian persists in withholding consent, it is permissible to refer the matter to the judiciary, and this is not an act of disobedience. The father's ill-treatment does not negate the obligation to be dutiful to him. Whoever dies unmarried, Allah will marry her in Paradise.
