What are the causes of a constricted livelihood and how can it be expanded?

The constriction and expansion of provision (rizq) are among the decrees of Allah, according to profound wisdoms. Allah the Almighty says: "Allah extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts it for him. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things." (Quran 29:62). Among the greatest causes for the expansion of provision is piety (taqwa) towards Allah. Allah the Almighty says: "And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect." (Quran 65:2-3). And among the greatest causes for its constriction is disobedience to Allah, for "Indeed, a man is deprived of provision because of a sin he commits." (Hadith, Ibn Majah). Among the causes for the expansion of provision are maintaining ties of kinship and spending in the way of Allah. Among the causes for its constriction is dealing with usury (riba). The expansion or constriction of provision refers to the blessings, happiness, and tranquility that Allah bestows.
