Does the disapprobation of sleeping before 'Isha apply to all prayers after their time has begun, or is it permissible to do so before the time begins, even if it is highly probable one will not wake up?
It is not disliked to sleep before the prayer time, except for the 'Isha' prayer. Regarding the 'Isha' prayer, there are two views among the Shafi'is concerning the dislike of sleeping before it:
1. The well-known view: It is disliked to sleep after the time for 'Isha' begins, unless sleep overwhelms him, in which case there is no dislike. It is forbidden to sleep if he believes that sleep will consume the entire time, unless he is overcome by sleep unintentionally. 2. The second view: It is disliked to sleep after the Maghrib prayer, even before the 'Isha' prayer time begins, due to the short duration of this period.
The Shafi'is based their reasoning on the of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "He used to dislike sleeping before it [the 'Isha' prayer] and conversing after it."
The Malikis and Hanbalis view sleeping between Maghrib and 'Isha' as disliked absolutely, while the Hanafis do not consider it disliked if one appoints someone to wake him up.
If a person sleeps before the prayer, he must intend to wake up for it and take measures that will awaken him.
