To whom is Zakat disbursed, with legal proof?

The recipients of Zakat (definition) are eight categories, exclusively enumerated in verse 60 of Surat At-Tawbah (definition), namely:

1. The poor (al-fuqara') and the needy (al-masakin): These are those in need who do not find what suffices them or find only a portion of it. 2. Those employed to collect (al-amiluna alayha): Those who are responsible for collecting Zakat; they are given from it even if they are wealthy. 3. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (al-muallafatu qulubuhum): Those who have recently embraced Islam and are given from it to reconcile their hearts. 4. For freeing captives (fi ar-riqab): This refers to Muslim mukatabs (slaves who have a contract to buy their freedom), the freeing of Muslim slaves, and Muslim prisoners of war. 5. The debtors (al-gharimun): Those who are indebted and unable to repay their debts. 6. In the cause of Allah (fi sabilillah): This refers to warriors who volunteer for jihad and spending on the interests of war. 7. The wayfarer (ibn as-sabil): The traveler whose provisions have run out; he is given what will enable him to reach his home country.
