What is the wisdom behind the waiting period ('iddah) in a khul' divorce if there has been a long separation between the spouses, and are there any exceptions for such a case?

The waiting period (iddah) does not begin until after a divorce (talaq) or annulment (khul') has occurred. It was not legislated merely to confirm the emptiness of the womb. The woman should first attempt reconciliation with her husband. If that is not possible, she should then seek a divorce or annulment. If he does not respond and there is nothing left but to await the court's judgment, then she must fear Allah, be patient, and frequently supplicate with the prayer: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." She should also avoid things that incite desire, fast frequently, occupy herself with beneficial activities, and associate with righteous women.
