Is a person held accountable for a lie uttered out of amusement or bewilderment if he realizes his mistake and corrects the information later?

One who lies unintentionally is not sinful, for his nation is forgiven for mistakes and forgetfulness. However, intentional lying is a major sin. If the liar regrets his lie, the sin is removed from him, for repentance erases what came before it of sins.
